I just wanted to change the padding on a button. Three prompts later, my navigation is gone and I have a completely different layout. How do you keep Claude focused on the actual change?

A little human perspective.

Try starting a fresh chat with just the component you need to change. Long conversations tend to accumulate conflicting instructions. Sharing a screenshot of the exact button helps, too.

Give it a very explicit boundary: “Only modify the padding in the Button component. Keep all other styles, markup, and behavior unchanged.” I also ask it to explain the proposed diff before editing. A smaller, focused context makes a big difference.

A useful workflow is to commit the working version first, then ask for one change at a time. Review the diff after each step so you can catch unrelated changes immediately.
